Strengthening Collaboration between the Global Rule of Law Commission and ELGU through Distinguished Guest Lectures

The European Law and Governance University (ELGU) Cascais reinforced its collaboration with the Global Rule of Law Commission (GRoLC) by hosting two distinguished Commission members for a series of guest lectures. This event marked an important step in deepening the academic and institutional partnership between the two bodies, united in their commitment to advancing dialogue on democracy, governance, and the Rule of Law worldwide.

On 7 January, the ELGU community had the honor of welcoming Professor Luiz María Díez-Picazo, Justice at the Supreme Court of Spain and Dean of ELGU, alongside Professor Paul Gowder from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. Their lectures offered valuable insights into pressing global issues, including the role of international customary law in constitutional adjudication and the evolving state of the Rule of Law in the United States, with particular reflections on governance under the Trump administration.

The ELGU post-graduate students participating in the LLM in International Organizations further benefited from a week-long seminar on “The Law of the UN” from 12 to 16 January, lectured by Ambassador Andreas Mavroyannis, Member of the UN International Law Commission, offering invaluable insights and analysis on the legal framework and reform of UN institutions.

Through these scholarly exchanges, the GRoLC and ELGU reaffirmed their shared mission to promote critical reflection and comparative understanding of legal systems across the world and underscored the growing synergy between the Commission and the School in shaping future global legal thought.
